A Sowa Rigpa external therapy

What Lum is —
and how it
works.

Lum is a traditional external therapy of Sowa Rigpa that uses warm medicinal water, steam, or another practitioner-selected application. It is not simply a spa bath: suitability and the method are considered before treatment.

In the traditional teaching, Lum is associated with moistening and softening. Before recommending it, a qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner considers the person's reason for visiting, constitution, age, strength, current condition, and other relevant health information.

Recognized as living cultural heritage

Inscribed by UNESCO

In 2018, UNESCO inscribed the knowledge and practices of Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The inscription recognizes the living tradition itself; it is not a certification of an individual center or a claim that Lum is suitable for everyone.

01

Assessment comes first

Lum is not self-selected from a treatment menu. A qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner reviews suitability and may approve, adjust, postpone, or advise against a session.

02

There is no single formula

The preparation, method, treatment area, duration, and level of support depend on the individual and the practitioner's guidance. Kalpavriksha does not apply one fixed temperature, formula, or session length to every guest.

03

Explanation and consent

Before Lum begins, the team explains the process, answers questions, prepares the room and ordered materials, and confirms consent. Guests may pause or stop at any time, with assistance arranged according to their needs.

How a Lum visit works

Assessment.
Preparation.
Bathing. Rest.

A Lum visit follows a clear sequence. The exact preparation and session details vary because the same method is not appropriate for every person.

Ku Nye · Traditional Tibetan massage

Massage with
a specific tradition
behind it.

The massage offered at Kalpavriksha will be Ku Nye, the traditional Tibetan massage practice used within Sowa Rigpa. It generally combines oil application with rubbing, kneading, and other external techniques. We will still use the word “massage” when that is clearest for guests, while naming the tradition accurately.

At Kalpavriksha, Ku Nye is provided by experienced massage practitioners trained in the tradition under the guidance of our qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner. Each session begins with a clear intake so the approach can be matched to the guest's needs and comfort.

Why the experience feels different

Care is in
the details.

Premium wellness is not about excess. It is the feeling that nothing important has been rushed, overlooked, or left to chance.

From practitioner guidance and private rooms to the warmth, materials, pacing, and time to settle afterwards, the Kalpavriksha experience is designed as one considered whole.

01

Personal guidance

Your visit begins with listening, context, and a thoughtful conversation about suitability.

02

Complete privacy

Private bathing and treatment rooms create space for dignity, quiet, and uninterrupted care.

03

Sensory precision

Light, material, warmth, sound, and movement are composed to help the nervous system settle.

04

Time to integrate

Before your first visit

Practical questions,
clear answers.

These are useful starting points. Lum and Ku Nye recommendations are considered individually before a session is confirmed.

Who decides whether Lum is suitable?

A qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner reviews relevant health information and the reason for your visit. Lum may be approved, adjusted, postponed, or not recommended. It is not a self-selected spa service.

What happens during a first visit?

Your visit begins with an intake and suitability assessment. If Lum is appropriate, the team explains the session, prepares the practitioner-selected method and room, confirms consent, and gives you time to bathe and rest. The exact preparation and duration vary by person.

What is Ku Nye massage?

Ku Nye is traditional Tibetan massage within Sowa Rigpa. It generally combines oil application with rubbing, kneading, and other external techniques. At Kalpavriksha, it is provided by experienced massage practitioners trained in Ku Nye under the guidance of a qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner.

Do I need to know Sowa Rigpa?

No. Curiosity is enough. Our role is to hold the tradition with respect and help you understand the experience in clear, grounded language.
